Mayhaps. It would seem that some of us recall more than others. If we recall the same things at all.
[ if nothing else, Theon's response made it clear that he did not share the same memories of the Westeros that Jon Snow seemed to recall. it seemed impossible, yet none of this made much sense in the long run. ]
When we arrived, I met with Lord Commander Snow. He told me that he recalled things that I knew could not have come to pass. That Lord Seaworth, a man I knew to be dead, still drew breath. That I marched my lady wife and daughter into battle.
[ it was that last point that stuck with him, truthfully. for it was a thing that he could not begin to contemplate doing. he had already lost his young squire to the march. his lady wife and daughter would have likely fared little better. ]
He also said that he knew Theon Greyjoy's sister as "Yara", rather than "Asha". "Asha Greyjoy" was the woman captured when I retook Deepwood Motte. I also spoke with her in this place.
[ another pause, as he grinds his teeth from side to side. ]
I know you committed your treason alone, turncloak. You are fortunate that we are no longer in Westeros, for I will not harm you unless you seek to murder more children here.
[ His words come out far harsher he intends, a snarl in place of his laughter. His last meeting with Jon Snow had been strange and uncharacteristic. The man had accepted Theon, told him that he was both a Stark and a Greyjoy and that he never needed to choose between the two…it had come out of nowhere, and Theon wonders now if Jon isn’t smarter and more manipulative than he had always pegged him for. Those words had played to the most vulnerable part of Theon’s psyche. He’s a man who has never truly known who he is, and that is beginning to show more than ever. Perhaps the mask he wore for all those years in Winterfell has finally grown transparent, and Jon can see through it.
As Stannis’s teeth grind, Theon’s clench tightly together in a forced, angry grimace of a smile. He laughs, though it’s a hollow, bitter sound. It seems they've both been given strange information that doesn't quite add up, and all from the same person. ]
He told me that he knew my sister to be in need of rescuing from our uncle Euron, yet he doesn’t even know her name? I may be a turncloak, but Jon Snow is a liar and a fool. I’ll not believe a word he has to say to me.
[ Asha once claimed her name to be Esgred, to fool her brother. Theon recalls that, and how angry he had been with her when he learned the truth. He doesn’t believe this is the same case. He’s shared memories of his family with Robb many times. In some manner, that information should have spread to Jon.
Theon hates how much he doubts, and he hates how heavily it weighs upon him. He has never never liked Jon, but he never found him to be an untrustworthy person. Now, he isn’t certain he can believe even that much of him. ]
I seek to murder no one here, save for the man who ordered Winterfell be set to the torch, should he wake. That was not my doing. And should anyone wish to punish me for my misdoings, it will be the King in the North.
